Wounded Warrior Fundraiser
Bearingstar Insurance’s Kathy Piro from the Fairfield office, and Pat Buchanan, founder, co-organized the Fourth Annual Golf Classic supporting the Wounded Warrior Project. The event, held June 29 at the Oronoque Country Club in Stratford, brought together 110 golfers and 25 sponsors. The event raised over $9,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project, a non-profit organization whose vision is to foster the most successful, well-adjusted generation of wounded service members in our nation’s history.
As part of its Community Gift Program, Bearingstar Insurance Charitable Fund was proud to support the tournament as a top sponsor. In addition to a monetary donation, Bearingstar Insurance sponsored the $10,000 hole-in-one prize.
“The tournament was a great success and we were able to give back to those who have sacrificed so much for our country and our freedom,” said Piro. “I am proud to have been part of this great fundraiser and, with the help from my team at Bearingstar, support such a wonderful organization.”
Justin Nash, founder and chairman of nonprofit Til Duty is Done, was invited to this year’s tournament as a special guest. Nash was wounded in the line of duty and received a medical discharge from the Army. He launched Til Duty is Done to help provide a safe and secure community for veterans through supportive housing, employment training and employment opportunities. Also present was guest speaker Al Meadows, founder of Operation Gift Cards, which collects gift cards and gives them to wounded soldiers at the Walter Reed Hospital on a monthly basis.
In 2010, Buchanan, along with Bill O’Neil and Rich Patterson, organized the inaugural tournament after his son returned home from military service unharmed but several of his friends were injured. Buchanan wanted to recognize those friends along with all the young people serving our country today.
The first year was a challenge, but now the event is up and running and growing every year.
