Helping Housatonic Habitat for Humanity
The Bearingstar Insurance Charitable Fund, in partnership with Bearingstar Insurance, 31 West Street, Danbury, CT, recently donated $2,000 to the Housatonic Habitat for Humanity. In addition to the donation, employees from the Danbury office volunteered their time to the organization by spending a day working at the building site where five condominium homes are being constructed on Hospital Avenue in Danbury, Conn. Housatonic Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit housing organization that mobilizes volunteers to build affordable housing in Greater Danbury that is sold to low-income working families. Working with local partners like Bearingstar, Habitat helps to make decent affordable shelter a community priority.
“It was a rewarding experience to join forces with Habitat for Humanity to help create affordable housing in our town,” said Chris Gray, insurance consultant at Bearingstar Insurance. “Finding suitable housing is a major issue for many in our area, and we are proud to have had the opportunity to donate our time and money to such a worthy cause.”
Team members from the Danbury office of Bearingstar Insurance spent the day putting up insulation in the garage, cutting lumber for the deck, taking measurements for the stairs and deck and helped with general cleanup. The volunteers participating in the project were Chris Gray, Irene Semeniuk, Carol Wynimko and Marleen Turner.
“We are very thankful to the Bearingstar Charitable Fund for their time and generous donation,” said Fran Norman, Executive Director of the local Habitat affiliate. “Bearingstar has been a consistent supporter of affordable housing in the region and throughout the state.” Norman added that affordable housing is more than providing homes. Habitat homes revitalize communities and add to a community’s tax base. Established in 1991, Housatonic Habitat has built 27 homes and serves a 16 town region from New Canaan to Washington. In addition to housing, Habitat operates a ReStore, a thrift-type home improvement warehouse open to the public, and offers a repair program for low-income homeowners.
Bearingstar founded the Bearingstar Insurance Charitable Fund (BICF), a division of the Arbella Insurance Charitable Foundation, in 2012. The mission of the BICF is to engage in activities and to support not-for-profit organizations that have a significant positive impact on the people and communities Bearingstar serves.
